Psychological assessment
Personality assessment
A structured clinical assessment of how a person characteristically thinks, relates and copes, using internationally validated instruments and interpreted by a qualified clinical psychologist. In clinic in PECHS and DHA, Karachi.

What it measures
A personality assessment describes patterns — how a person characteristically responds under pressure, what they do with anger, how close they let people get, what they reach for when something goes wrong, and how stable those patterns have been across their life. It uses internationally validated instruments, and the instruments are the smaller half of it: the clinical interpretation is what turns a set of responses into something meaningful.
People come to it for very different reasons. Some have been given a word by a relative, a previous clinician or the internet and want to know what is actually going on. Some have watched the same difficulty repeat across three jobs or two marriages and want to understand the shape of it. Some are already in therapy and their psychologist has suggested it, because knowing how a person is built changes what kind of therapy is likely to help.
What it is notIt is not one of the free personality tests online, and the difference is not one of quality — a sixteen-letter type, a colour or an animal is entertainment, and nothing produced by one belongs in a clinical file. It is not a verdict, and it does not sort people into good and bad ways of being. It is not a fixed sentence about who you will always be. And it is not a device for one person to have another person assessed: an assessment is undertaken with the person being assessed, for their benefit, and the report is written to them.
What happens, step by step
PHC is an assessment-first practice, and this assessment is often the one that makes the difference to what therapy is offered afterwards.
- An initial session. We ask what has been going on, over what span of time, and what has made it a question now. If you have been given a diagnosis or a report before, bring it. Nothing is administered before this conversation.
- A decision about what is warranted.Whether a personality assessment is the right instrument for the question, and what should sit alongside it — often emotional assessment and symptom screening, because mood and anxiety can look like character from the inside. You will not be given tests you do not need.
- Administration and clinical interview.Structured instruments administered by a qualified clinical psychologist, alongside a clinical interview about history and pattern, because a response to an item means little without the life it sits in. Assessment sessions run about two hours for a child and about three hours for an adult. Where sessions are held daily an assessment is usually finished in about a week; more often it takes two to three weeks, and we do not recommend stretching it past three — the length depends on what the initial session found was warranted, and you are told before you come.
- A written report. What was administered, the patterns it describes, how they tend to show up in work and in relationships, and what that suggests about the kind of therapeutic work likely to be useful. The report belongs to you. It is not sent to a family member, an employer or anyone else without your say-so. The report is with you in two to three weeks, depending on how complex the case is. The tests are scored and interpreted, the report is written, and Prof. Dr. Tahira Yousaf reviews and approves it before it is handed over.
- A conversation about what follows.Where the finding points to therapy, DBT is often indicated for difficulty with emotional regulation and relationships, and CBT where patterns of thinking are doing the most damage. Which applies to you is decided from the assessment, not from a website.
Who it is for, and who it is not for
Adults, and adolescents where it is clinically appropriate — patterns are still forming in adolescence and a good assessment says so rather than stamping a young person with a description they will carry.
It is not for settling a dispute, and it is not something PHC will do to someone on another person's request. If you are worried about a family member, that is a real and legitimate worry, but the route is a conversation about how to support them, not an assessment conducted about them.
It is also not the first thing that happens when someone is in acute distress. Where a person is in crisis, the crisis comes first and the assessment waits.
What it is used to answer
- Personality disorderswhat the diagnosis means and does not mean, and the therapies our clinicians are trained in.
- Bipolar disorderpsychological support alongside psychiatric care.
Both of those pages route here for assessment, and this page lists them back.

Questions people ask first
Is this the same as the personality tests online?
No, and it is worth being blunt about it. A free quiz that returns four letters, a colour or an animal is entertainment. This uses internationally validated clinical instruments, it is administered and interpreted by a qualified clinical psychologist, and the interpretation — not the instrument — is where the value is. Nothing produced by a website belongs in a clinical file, and no school, employer or clinician will treat it as if it does.
What does the report actually say about me?
It describes patterns: how you tend to respond under pressure, how you relate to people, what you reach for when things go wrong, and how consistent those have been. It is written to be read by you, in ordinary language. It does not grade you, and it does not tell you who you are — it describes what was observed and measured, and what that suggests would help.
Someone has already told me I have a personality disorder. Does this confirm it?
Bring whatever you were given and we will start there. A term used in conversation, in a report or by a relative is not the same as an assessment by a qualified clinical psychologist — sometimes an assessment supports what you were told, sometimes it describes something quite different, and either way you end up with a document that says what was actually found.
Can I have someone else assessed — my husband, my son, my sister?
No. An assessment is undertaken with the person being assessed, with their agreement, and the report is written to them. If you are worried about someone, get in touch anyway — the useful conversation is about how to support them and how to raise it, and that is a conversation we can have.
What does it cost, and how long does it take?
Assessment sessions run about two hours for a child and about three hours for an adult. Where sessions are held daily an assessment is usually finished in about a week; more often it takes two to three weeks, and we do not recommend stretching it past three. Fees vary by psychologist and by service, and the length depends on what the initial session found was warranted. You send us six details, we come back with a psychologist, a time and a fee, and you decide. How fees and booking work.
Confidentiality, session length and choosing your psychologist are answered in full in questions people ask before booking.
Where testing happens
Speaking to someone starts here
PHC is appointment-only. Message or call and a real person answers — Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm PKT.
Not sure whether this is us? Contact us anyway. We will tell you directly whether we can help, and refer you elsewhere if we cannot.
Six details, and we can match you
- Name of the person who will attend
- Their age
- What is going on, in your own words
- Whether you would prefer a male or female psychologist
